Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there lived a Princess. The princess was the most beautiful in all the land, but she was to be kept hidden for her own safety, forced to live out her days trapped in the highest room of the tallest tower in all the land. She lived alone, with only her books and the birds that came to perch on her window ledge for company, until the day when her true love would arrive, and bring with him true love’s first kiss, breaking the spell so she would be free to live among her people once more.
But there was an evil force threatening to take her true love away and cast him out to keep the curse within the Princess alive. For the wicked witch didn’t want the Princess to be free, she wanted the Princess to be trapped forever, forced to live out her life under the witch’s evil ruling, forced to comply and do as the witch says until the day she died.
Until one day, the Prince returned upon his black stallion, slaying the evil witch and rescuing his true love, breaking her curse with true love’s kiss and riding away with her into the sunset, where they lived happily ever after.

“Hey!”
You put down the book, your head snapping to the window. It’s been days since you’ve heard someone else’s voice other than your own. The last time you heard a stranger’s voice it was distant, and it passed within minutes. You could only assume it was passing hikers. The tower you call home is hidden by a cloaking spell, so no one really knows you’re even here, except your parents and the witch that cast the spells that keep you safe.
Your parents had promised you this is a temporary thing, just until they can find your true mate. Ever since you started puberty, and began showing the tell-tale traits that you might present as an Omega, your parents had sought out ways to protect you. No royal heir had ever been an Omega before, let alone the Princess next in line for the throne; the only living heir. Every other person that has carried the royal bloodline has presented as an Alpha. You are the first Omega with royal blood to exist that you’re aware of and your parents had explained how that made the world a dangerous place for you. Alphas from all over the world would want to seek you out, claim you and breed you for your royal pups. The only way to stop that from happening was to hide you away, surround you with spells and curses that only your true mate is immune to and your parents know how to suppress.
That means whoever is calling up your tower can see you and that they’re immune to the spells and the curses. Which means they’re your true mate.
You rush to the window and push it open, looking down to the ground to see a man dismounting a horse. He’s still wearing his helmet, so you can’t get much of a look yet, but you can smell him from all the way up here– it’s a little smoky, leather and maybe whiskey. You remember the smell of the drink from one of your father’s studies back home. Your heart is pounding in your chest as you wait patiently for the man below to remove his helmet. You know this has to be your true mate, because otherwise he wouldn’t see you there. Your whole body is practically tingling with excitement at the thought of finally meeting him and being able to return to your kingdom once it is safe to do so because he has claimed you.
“You’re the Princess, right?” he calls up.
“Yes, Alpha,” you reply excitedly, still a little nervous to see his face.
He doesn’t show it as he heads towards the tower door, his helmet still placed firmly on his head. You hear the door creak open, amazed that he’s able to get inside so easily when there have been moments of darkness where you’ve attempted to flee your tower, only to be met with impossible seals and locks in your way. But the Alpha – your Alpha – seems to be having no issues, walking in like it was never even locked to begin with.
You can hear your heart thudding in your ears as his boots stomp heavily on the steps he’s climbing to reach you, and as he comes into view, you inhale sharply and just stare at him wide-eyed.
“Your father sent me to get you. So, you coming?” he asks, gesturing to the staircase he’s just appeared from.
“May I see your face, Alpha?” you ask politely, remembering the manners your mother had taught you for this very moment.
“Why? Don’t you wanna get outta here already?” he asks, looking around. The only thing you can see past the helmet is piercing green eyes, and your nerves only build higher. “C’mon, I haven’t got all day.”
You don’t want to upset your new Alpha, so you comply, following him back down the steps to the door. You hesitate at the threshold; something feels weird, not quite right about this. But maybe that’s because you’ve been locked away in this very tower for the last five years, seeing no one except your mother during her monthly visits, and you’ve not been outside in all that time. It’s both terrifying and exhilarating. Your Alpha stops and turns around to look at you when he realizes you haven’t followed him, and huffs a breath.
“Are you coming?” he asks impatiently.
You bite your bottom lip, swallowing nervously. “I would like to see your face,” you explain meekly.
The Alpha sighs heavily, looking around himself. “Why? I’ve already told you, your father sent me to retrieve you.”
“For years I’ve dreamed of the day that my true mate would come, break through all the spells cast on my tower, and come to my rescue. I would like to see my true mate’s face, please,” you explain as confidently as possible.
“Your true mate?” he questions, letting out a laugh before stopping himself and clearing his throat. Once again he glances around himself. “Alright, I guess I can show you, but if I do, will you please just come with me? We’re running out of time and I really don’t wanna have to fight with you.” You lick your lips and nod your head in agreement, and he sighs.
The Alpha reaches up and slowly pulls his helmet off, and the first thing you notice is a strong jawline, high chiseled cheekbones with long lashes on his sparkling green eyes. His lips are quite full for a man, and there’s a slight dusting of freckles across his nose and cheeks. His hair is a little ruffled, but he reaches up and quickly combs his fingers through it. He’s gorgeous, you can’t help but notice. You’d always imagined what your true mate would look like, but you never imagined someone as perfect as he is.
“Happy? Will you come with me now? This shit only lasts so long,” he grunts, snapping you out of your thoughts.
You bite your bottom lip and nod your head to show your compliance, finally stepping over the threshold and onto the grass. You can’t remember the last time you felt something other than stone or rug beneath your feet, and you feel nervous but excited as you slowly make your way over to your Alpha. Without warning, he lifts you onto his horse, sitting you on the back end of it, and you whimper, not realizing he was so strong. He pushes his helmet back on his head, and climbs up to mount the horse himself, and you’re forced to grab onto his middle as he begins to ride you away from the prison you’d called home for the last five years. You know you’re not going to miss it, though, not when you’re going back to where you belong, with the Alpha you belong to.
You’ve been riding with your Alpha for nearly an hour when you suddenly realize that you don’t even know your true mate’s name, and he hasn’t asked for yours. Though you suppose if your father sent him then he already knows it. Still, the introduction you had to your new life long partner isn’t quite what you’d envisioned. You’d read so many fairy tales you’d assumed that yours would be the same; the prince barges in, fresh from a fight and sweeps you off your feet, and then your heart skips a beat as you lay eyes on the love of your life, you’d share your first kiss and he’d whisk you away into forever.
Only your true love seems eager to return you to your parents, and didn’t even give you his name. You definitely don’t feel that “heart skipped a beat” feeling, but he has to be your true mate to have broken the spells.
“Alpha, what’s your name?” You ask, raising your voice above the gallop of his horse.
The Alpha briefly glances back over his shoulder in your direction, before keeping his eyes straight ahead.
“I’m Y/N,” you offer, hoping to prompt him. The horse stops, and you realize you’ve arrived at some kind of abandoned farmhouse. You frown, a little confused, but try to trust your Alpha as he dismounts the horse and begins to guide you towards what looks like a stable.
“Alpha? Where are we?” you ask, surprised you’re not at the palace you grew up in with your parents. Have they lost the throne somehow? Why would your parents live here now?
Your Alpha doesn’t reply, he just grabs your arm and yanks you down from the horse less than gracefully, pulling you roughly towards what looks like a barn further across the field. An uneasy feeling forms in the pit of your stomach but try to tell yourself you’re being paranoid. He’s your true mate, he’s not going to put you in harm’s way, right? This is all just scary and new to you because you’ve not left the safety of your tower in five years. You have to assume that he is going to explain everything soon enough, and it’ll all be okay.
At least that’s what you keep telling yourself as he drags you closer and closer to the building with far less respect and consideration than you imagined your true mate ever having towards you. His grip is getting considerably tighter the closer you get, and his scent gets stronger, until it changes and you realize that it’s not just his scent, there’s more– other scents mixing with your mate’s. There’s so many you can’t even pinpoint them anymore, and it starts to get extremely overwhelming.
Your Alpha practically kicks the door down, and instantly the smell hits you ten times worse. You know there are other alphas around from the stench in the air, but you don’t see any yet. That’s when you hear a loud bang come from a room further down the corridor, and you realize there are several smaller rooms coming off of it too. The door rattles, but whoever is inside can’t get out because it appears to be locked, and then you hear a man grunting.
“Give him the fuckin’ shot!”
“Fuck you!” Another man growls, and then the commotion seems to end.
You continue to stare at the door nonetheless, now even more afraid than you were before, maybe even fearful for your life.
“Alpha? Where are we? What’s going on?” you demand, now a little more assertively despite yourself.
But he ignores you once again, shoving you into a different room. This one is empty except for a mattress on the floor, and he pushes you closer to it and glares at you menacingly.
“Alpha?” you ask again, tears now pressing at the back of your eyes.
Despite only meeting this alpha a matter of hours before, you still feel the sting of betrayal as the reality of your situation sinks in and you realize that your fairy tale rescue is nothing like the books made it out to be.
“Stop fucking calling me that,” he growls, clenching his fists at his side. “I’m not your fucking Alpha.”
Swallowing hard, you try to process what this man has just said to you, but you’re too confused.
“But the spells… you… you broke them,” you choke out.
Before he can reply or even start to explain himself, the door opens, and some other man strolls in casually, a smirk curling over his lips between his salt and pepper beard as he sets eyes on you. His teeth are pearly white when he grins, and he clicks his tongue.
“Well hell-fucking-lo, darlin’,” he drawls, his hazel eyes dragging up and down your body several times. You hug yourself with your arms, feeling humiliated for some reason.
“About fucking time, it’s wearing off, and I didn’t feel like being on your bad list,” the Alpha that had tricked you grunts.
“On my bad fuckin’ list you would’ve fuckin’ been,” the older man scoffs. “You know I want first dibs.” The other Alpha doesn’t reply, and you instantly wonder first dibs of what? “It worked then?” he asks. The other Alpha shrugs.
“Didn’t need to use it, for some reason.”
“Yeah, I think I fuckin’ know why. Well, thanks, Dean, I’ll take it from here.”
‘Dean’ takes one last look at you and then leaves, closing the door behind you, and you can’t help but feel like you’re in deep trouble with the way this other Alpha is staring you down.
“Where am I? Is my Alpha here?” you ask, hopeful this is all just some misunderstanding.
“I’m right fuckin’ here, sweetheart,” he chuckles coldly, stepping closer to you as he begins to strip his leather jacket off and reaching for the belt on his pants. You can already tell by his scent that he’s not your Alpha. “C’mere, it’s about time you were fuckin’ bred.”
